Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
