In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
