The Game's Dodge Roll Merits Recognition

Having spent time with Elden Ring, or just about any third-person combat game, you're likely acquainted with the wonderful technique referred to as the “dodge roll.” This avoidance maneuver lets your avatar to perform a front, lateral, or rearward somersault to dodge all incoming damage and move away from opponents. Seems useful, right?

This rolling move, however, has gotten a lot of flak, and not only due to the tumbling; it's been called dumb, a cop-out, and an unrealistic move — and occasionally, I concur. Picture me somersaulting past nearby enemy groups in another popular RPG — untouchable! But this game's rolling dodge stands as the roll to outdo all previous rolling dodges, and let me explain.

For this particular game, the designers identified an excellent method to respond to all views that the move is too easy: just grant every enemy overwhelming force, triple that, and all heroes who ventures close them will feel immensely thankful for their dodge-roll ability, me included. When the stakes are this high, successfully rolling to victory seems like an accomplishment, instead of an unfair advantage.

No different defensive move in the game comes close to this level of gratification and dependability, since rapid sprints provide minimal movement and guard stances are readily overcome by strong enemies. Someone once recommended jumping as a go-to game dodging technique, but in addition to lacking optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit would improve my chances of overcoming challenges (inexperience, possibly).

Perfecting the Skill

While this evasion move offers respite in a famously difficult title, it isn't without skill. Firstly, this title's rolling dodge only triggers a frame of protection following you let go of the evasion key, which stops a hasty, frantic retreat from dire situations. Moreover, while it might transport you away from foes, it's far more effective to employ it as a chance to advance, preferably behind the opponent, and deliver attacks. Lastly, you must still comprehend and predict foe assaults, because rolling prematurely of a long charging animation might terminate your protection before the blow lands… resulting in severe damage.

A Balanced Mechanic

While dodge-rolling in fast repetition might seem rather absurd (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't truly feasible in the game. Naturally, that still doesn't make it a realistic battle technique — which is precisely why it would be dreadful to experience it in a product like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — but this is a flashy fantasy title being considered, so who cares?

Like any proper evasion move, the game's rolling animation is improved by a little somersault-y hop at the beginning, giving it an energetic feel as opposed to placing the avatar downward. According to your loadout, the technique may seem incredibly quick or moderately cumbersome, but it remains faster and more fluid than the dodge rolls found in Dark Souls. True, you could plant your big blade into the ground while equipped with it, but that's your responsibility for avoiding alternative arms (Just kidding — steer clear of Elden Ring with projectile weapons).

Optimal Harmony

The game's dodging mechanic establishes an ideal equilibrium between difficulty and chance, providing prospects of success while endangering that very prospect at the slightest mistake. Master this technique, and you'll obtain more than triumph, but fulfillment.
