Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
